The almond paste on the left had a texture not unlike sweet water (literally, "tang shui"), and has the reputation of smoothing the complexion; the black sesame, much pastier, is supposed to help black hair remain smooth and silky (S $1 per bowl). The second aunt (er gu) also offers bowls of tang shui flavored with red bean and peanut, but their powers remain a mystery to me.
