Ya ka mein (Yah-kuh-Meen; $5) was a peppery beef noodle soup that's both lip-tingling and, I imagine, restorative; click on the photo for a better look at the stall, which lists the alternative name "old sober." Also served at lunchtime at the uptown Tipitina's, I was told.

This caterer is one of the best in New Orleans because of her Ya Ka mein recipe. Love it's peppery beef noodle soup.
