About 20 years ago Tom's, the Mill, and College Inn were the three most-frequented diners in the Columbia University neighborhood. Tom's has retained its looks inside and especially outside (it's the exterior for Monk's Diner on Seinfeld); apart from the lime rickey, the Mill now has an all-Korean menu. As for College Inn, it's been made over with large photos of 1940's diner interiors that aren't necessarily this diner or even this neighborhood, and with shelves of coffee tins, toys, bowling pins, and tchachkes that are props rather than keepsakes. The staff are friendly, even if they just work here.
A three-egg spinach-and-mushroom omelet (with rye toast and chunky home fries; $8.25) was very buttery and filling; so were three scrambled, on an earlier visit. Spinach and mushrooms were fine, for a diner.
