Leo's Latticini

Very friendly servers at this shrine for Mets fans, also known as Mama's (there's a stand with readymade sandwiches inside Shea itself). The slicer sits right up front on the low counter, under the gaze of signed photos from athletes and actors; on an early visit, when business was quiet, I got a taste of the ham, salami, and mozzarella as my hero was assembled.

I sat in Mama's bakery next door, though you're also welcome at the tables on the sidewalk or in the garden out back. Mama's special ($6.50), a crusty seeded hero piled with pepper ham, salami, fresh mozzarella, hot red peppers, and mushrooms, was good and meaty to the last bite, and hero held up very well despite the moistness of the mozzarella, peppers, and mushrooms.

Though somewhat diminished compared with the special of some years ago (bottom photo) — the mozzarella especially — the sandwich, and the service, are still worth the short walk south from the 7 train. The Thursday-only roast pork special still awaits a well-timed return visit from me.

OMG...your blog is awesome. You should come back to the Bronx around Whites Plain Rd. There is a good smoothie shop.
