Myers of Keswick

The favourite grocery of many British expats wears its colors proudly but doesn't put on airs.

Myers of Keswick is a home away from home for the Cornish pastie (Pass-tea; shown at left), a traditional miner's lunch that packs a comforting blend of minced meat plus a few peas and carrots. Some versions, I've heard (but never tried), include a savory filling in one end and a sweet filling in the other, so you can eat your way through two courses in one pastie.

On other occasions:

Marmite-flavored Walker's crisps (that is, potato chips; 34.5 g. bag), had a curious sour and salty flavor. A Cadbury Crunchie (40 g. bar) — "milk chocolate with a golden honeycombed centre" — was not unlike a Butterfinger that showed admirable restraint. A lamb curry pie ($2.50), which you'd think would fall in the savory pastie family, was surprisingly sweet.
