Sure, they were shucking Blue Points at the Norwalk Oyster Festival, but the tastiest thing I tried wasn't served on the half-shell.
In fact, the oysters were indifferent, either straight up (five for $7) or fried, in a po' boy ($8). If not for the lingonberries, a plate of Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes (below; $8) would have been almost without flavor. A kreinerwurst (smoked bratwurst; $8 plate) was fine, but the potato pancakes that joined it were cold, quite apart from the applesauce. Consolation: Each of the tents in the "International Food Court" was operated for the benefit of a nearby nonprofit community group.
The Red Cross tent also sported a banner from the BBQ restaurant Cookhouse; together they served up an excellent (if difficult to photograph) bowl of red, brimming with beef and pork ($5). At this point in the evening, their chili-and-ribs combo was too much to attempt, but a visit to Cookhouse is definitely on my agenda.
