Perhaps I caught this particular loaf of lard bread at the wrong time — it seemed too peppery, and a tad overbaked — but given Caputo's stellar reputation, I'll walk this way again.

They are never too peppery in my opinion, though I would agree your's looked a touch overbrowned. Regardless of a one time dissapointment Caputo's Lard bread ranks high above the rest that I've tasted around the neighborhood, and the one or two I've tried from around Bay Ridge and Astoria.
