My chocolate shake ($1.60) was thin but foamy and flavorful, too, and the metal mixing cup nearly had enough left over to fill my glass a second time.
With the likely exception of the fluorescent lights hanging from the plain high ceiling, most of the fixtures date at least to the 1930s, when Schnackenberg's served its first egg cream. Check out the narrow two-person booths, sized for the hips and thighs of an earlier generation (larger booths, and barstools, are also available).
On tap for another visit: a "Hoboken soda," flavored by chocolate ice cream and pineapple syrup.
