Upstate, the folks at Migliorelli press this very sweet cider ($1.50 per cup) from bosc pears; at the Union Square Greenmarket, they freshen it with whole pears studded with cinnamon (which tends to dissolve quickly) and cloves. You'll find it only until early winter, when the surplus from the pear harvest is exhausted.
On other occasions: A cameo apple ($1 per pound) was crisp, with a bright taste; a cake-style apple cider doughnut (below; 75 cents) was more subdued. Sugar snap peas ($4 per pound) were wonderful eaten out of hand, pods and all. They'll never replace edamame as a bar snack, but think of them sometime when you're refilling the office candy bowl.

I got pear cider from Migliorelli's yesterday, too! That's funny. I've been reading your website almost daily for a while now and it's a strange sensation to read a post regarding a place where I was on the same day and describing the same food item. I'll be on the look out for the guy with the camera.. Keep on eating, your site is much appreciated!
