You'd want to discard a fresh clam that couldn't keep its shell shut.
In the case of this overstuffed, chewy blueberry turnover ($1.35), however, the principal danger was to my shirt. Though the cherry looked mightly good, on a return visit I was drawn to the dry Sicilian cookies called cuccidati ($8.50 per pound), filled with fig and much less messy, except for the sprinkles.
