Today it was a St. Joseph's cake ($2.75), with the cannoli filling, not the custard, at the suggestion of the counterwoman. St. Joseph's Day, March 19, was still nearly a month away, but she noted that the bakery likes to offer these special-occasion pastries well in advance — which gave me a few weeks to return for the custard-filled model, too.
One a previous visit one June day, I passed up the crumb cake for a donut (75 cents) decorated for July 4.
When I did finally spring for a slab of the crumb cake ($5.95 for a 10-by-10-inch square), wouldn't you know I got a dry one. Even at a better bakery, you take your chances with the last of the sheet.

You have to try the birthday cakes. I make my own cakes ususually because my children don't like bakery cakes (I am a decent baker). Except the cakes from Oxford. Their birthday cakes are the BOMB!
