The featured ingredient in this Guyanese achar, or pickled relish (15 oz.; $3.99) is a small, light green, very sour fruit. While some achars are sweet, many more are spicy, and very quickly the inside of my mouth was reverberating to the tune of garam masala and garlic.
As for that unusual sign outside: Even in winter, the lady at the register told me, folks will buy castnets before heading down to Florida. In the warmer months, she added, the nets see some use in the New York area, too.

castnets are used quite a bit in the rockaways... you have to go to the offbeaten parts of the beach early in the morning. i have one somewhere in my garage.
they are good for catching "hassa" - armored catfish.

This store is the best west indian grocery store on Liberty Avenue. To be exact, it was the first west indian store to open around 1975. I always shop there. The staff is always willing to assist with whatever you need. I recommend this store to everyone.
