The name may be a Jordanian transliteration from the Arabic script — "knafeh" is much more common in New York — but a more important distinction is Laziza's restrained use of the syrupy sweetness that's too common at other bakeries.
I preferred the heft of the muffin-shaped model (above; $2), with its load of mixed chopped nuts, to the mixed-nut and pistachio "sheet" kanafa (below). Still my favorite, though, are the kanafa "rolls" filled with sweet cheese, topped with crushed pistachio, and drizzled with syrup. (See also the deep-dish, family-style version at Tanoreen).
Many locals call on Laziza for orders to go, but if you're just passing through the neighborhood, a few humble tables are available for dessert and tea.

I personally love your coverage of Astoria since I live in Astoria. Have you visited Euro Market on 31st between 30-31 ave? It is European-themed supermarket with many imported goods. I though you may enjoy...Also have you heard about Sarajevo Burek on 35 Ave. bet 37-38st?
Always amused by your finding and effort...

Laziza has the deep-dish kanafa too. They sell it by the slice.
