At Dominican vendors like this one, you'll see signs for maví (or perhaps mabí; the pronunciation is much the same); on Caribbean menus you may see it listed as mauby. By any name, it's a soft drink prepared from the bark of a certain Caribbean tree, plus sugar and often ginger and spices; typically it's fermented. Some bottled versions are carbonated, too; this one (about 16 fl. oz.; $2) was fizz-free. It was also unusually even-tempered: not too astringent, not too cloying, very refreshing.
