Shun Shun Bakery

Here's a date story for you.

The name of the bakery (which I noticed only later) was a turn-on, too. Much as anything, though, when all the customers were speaking Chinese and the gal at the counter greeted me with nothing more than an anxious smile, I wanted to give my "shoot and point" technique another spin. Easy as anything: I snapped a photo of the sign, showed the gal the image above and held up one finger, and she produced a well-loaded plastic cup. Then she turned to say something to her colleague off to one side, and he responded, "One-fifty." (Yes, just asking would have been even easier.)

My fungus drink was tepid, and frankly I'm not sure whether that was intended or simply the result of all the baked company it kept beneath the counter. The only thing that had any flavor? Those red items, which a reader suggests may actually be goji berries; something larger and more datelike lurked at the bottom. I won't give the cold shoulder to Shun Shun, but next time I'll order differently.

Those red things actually look like goji berries (gou qi zi) rather than dates.
