Barney Greengrass

It's so salty that your waiter will try to talk you out of it.

And if he steers you toward one of the tamer versions, with nova or sturgeon, likely you won't go wrong. But when your body is crying out for some salty sustenance, insist on the "LEO" ($14.50), as the scramble of lox, eggs, and sauteed onions is commonly known. (On this occasion, the onions were left a little long in the pan.) I'm fond of Dr. Brown's very fizzy sodas, like Cel-Ray ($2.50), but to balance all that salt, fresh-squeezed orange juice is a better pairing. Also shown below: an appetizer plate of chopped herring ($8.50).

Whether smoked fish or caviar, we get our "fix" at this singularly New York place. So does everyone else, on the weekends... so prepare to wait, or go for lunch early in the week when the wait is minimal. The "sampler" platters are superb for folks like us who can't make up their minds.
