Hummus Place

Another place to dip your pita.

When Hummus Place opened in 2005, its tiny menu centered on the namesake spread of mashed chickpeas, prepared several times a day. This original location has been joined by two more, with another on the way, and the menu has expanded slightly as well. Shakshuka ($6.95) is a mild tomato and vegetable stew bolstered by two eggs over easy; fill it out, if you like, with halumi (as shown; $2 extra), a salty and slow-to-melt Mediterranean cheese. Though shakshuka is much more substantial than hummus, typically it, too is scooped up with pita held in a practiced hand (my hand needs more practice).

Though only in winter, Hummus Place also serves sahlep, a soothing beverage that previously I'd found only on Coney Island Ave.
