"Jam" means "hour," and that indication on the awning signals an all-day, all-night market. Newly arrived in Penang, I was amused to spot an American soft drink that's hard to find even in New York: Kickapoo Joy Juice (300 ml.; rm 1.30 , or about 37 cents at the time). The original, cartoon version claimed a "stupefying potency," but the citrus-flavored version produced by the Monarch Beverage Co. of Atlanta is thoroughly non-alcoholic — and so, suitable for consumption by the largely Muslim populations of Malaysia, Brunei, and Bangladesh, where Monarch distributes it.
For the slightest extra kick, I also purchased (legally) a can of Anglia, "The Real Shandy" (not shown; 320 ml.; rm 2.30). It poured an orange-amber beverage, lightly carbonated and without a head, whose aroma and flavor suggested a blend of beer with orange and not lemon soda.
