It's an even better deal if you've just dropped some bucks at B&H.
(This post is based on visits to the eatery's now-closed 34th St. location, shown at bottom.) On the occasion of my previous visit to Soul Fixins', several years ago, I picked out a camera, followed by a "country lunch" of smothered chicken (not shown; $8.95). Cornbread, mac and cheese, and collard greens were OK, and though the moist chicken was nothing out of the ordinary, I licked the bones clean.
The economy being what it is, my more recent lunch (sandwiched between two free B&H seminars) was their "bailout special" of fried chicken, coconut rice with gravy, and mixed vegetables. Ditto on my earlier writeup, but the lower, $6.95 tab also included a small (12 fl. oz. or so) sweet lemonade.

I wonder if this place can hold a candle to Sylvia's...

The better comparisons would be to Margie's Red Rose Diner, Miss Mamie's Spoonbread, and
Amy Ruth's, all of which serve "higher wattage" chow than Sylvia's and Soul Fixins'.

I used to live a block from here. The rice + veggies combo is great, although very infrequently the veggies are too vinegary. The fried chicken is to die for. And the lemonade is very good.
