Even measured against the definition-stretching specimen at Mahony's, in New Orleans, this grilled shrimp "po' boy sandwich" ($12.75) is an outlier. It's served on ciabatta, which might help provide a consistent product at the stadium but that's also much stiffer and heavier than the familiar Leidenheimer's loaf. In place of the traditional dressings — lettuce, tomato, mayo, and pickle — Catch of the Day employs hot pepper, carrot, what may be jicama, and a coarse-grained "Creole mustard." For that matter, po' boys generally aren't spicy unless and until you add hot sauce yourself; this one kept zinging me till I got ahold of the house cola.
To be sure, it's a good sandwich, featuring great shellfish; you'd expect no less from David Pasternack, the guiding hand behind Esca. I'd like to get my mitts on his lobster roll, too.
