Purely by luck, I paid a call on Nekisia Davis ("Nicky") and her stall at Brooklyn Flea on the Saturday morning before she appeared on Martha Stewart. In fact, I was her first customer on her first day at the market, so I had an unhurried opportunity to try all three of her granola blends (12 oz.; $8 each). Aloha greeted me with macadamia and mango, while Jubilee (reportedly the first to sell out that day) trumpeted the flavors of pistachio and sour cherry, but ultimately I fell back on Early Bird's original recipe, Farmhand's Choice, which features pecans as well as pepitas and sunflower seeds.
Like its mates, Farmhand is built around rolled oats and takes a very satisfying savory sweetness from toasted coconut, maple syrup, extra virgin olive oil, brown sugar, and salt. It might be too indulgent while "plowing the back forty," as the label wryly suggests, but it could readily stand in for popcorn, as "a salty-sweet snack" at the theater. That was the plan, but my bag of Farmhand's Choice lasted only till my first TV movie.
