The deli Wellington ($4.95) boasts no beef tenderloin, or pate de fois gras, or duxelles. Inside the familiar puff pastry is a hash of pastrami, corned beef, potatoes, and onions, enough for a big nosh or a small meal. But not a dainty one: The filling is too heavy and moist for eating out of hand. Unless you're carrying your mess kit, be sure to take a fork.

Hey Dave thanks for the shoutout on midtown lunch. I'm glad you enjoyed it, it's damn good.

By email, a reader who once worked in this neighborhood found little to salute at Sarge's but did acknowledge that "the Deli Wellington is a great conceit. They should call it Beef Delington, though."

Dave, I posted about the deli wellington and Sarge's souper soup on my blog: http://lawandfood.blogspot.com/2010/02/all-hail-souper-soup.html
I linked to your post. Beef Delington is a great name, Sarge's should take a hint.
