Big German beer selection, too, which I sampled sparingly, only enough to wash down my sauerbraten sandwich ($9), on a kaiser roll, mit fries. It's a very sturdy sandwich, let's call it; the full contents of that gravy boat were an additional, essential lubricant.

Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear this. Helmer's used to have some of the best sauerbraten around. The spicy version was out of this world.
I lived in Hoboken from 1985 to 1991 and I was in Helmer's at least 2x a month. It was easily my favorite German restaurant. Haven't found one since that measured up.

To be sure, I've had the sauerbraten just 1x total, and this time it's possible I caught the tail end. Then again, if Helmer's sauerbraten is made from the bottom round, as is common, everyone would catch the tail end.
