Last call at the cafeteria was in 1983; soon after, Wing Shoon Seafood Restaurant filled a briefly vacant corner in the shadow of the Forward Building. But for the prior four decades (and another three if you include predecessor eateries), The Garden Cafeteria was a center of Lower East Side intellectual life. Among this set of Bruce Davidson photos are seven from the cafeteria, one featuring its most renowned regular customer, Isaac Bashevis Singer.
