As a prelude to a light late-afternoon meal (this was the drift, at first, for our rudderless party of eight), my suggestion for a shared app was New Zealand cockles (below, shown as served; $12.95). They're easy to pass around and pick at, in a bet-you-can't-eat-just-one kind of way, and even the folks who insisted on using forks weren't shy about dunking their bread in the garlic sauce. Soon someone called for a refill on the bread basket. By and by, we extracted full value from the serving bowl, then sank back in our seats — but only till two vast platters of frutos do mar landed at the table.
