At chili parlors in and around Cincinnati, "coney" is a nod to a Coney Island hot dog, though more in name than in presentation. The default version includes mustard, chili, and diced onions on a very soft steamed bun; a cheese coney ($1.65) hides any trace of the wiener under shredded cheddar. Once a month you can find them in Manhattan, too, priced accordingly.

This is amazing... I'm from Ohio, and always get myself a 5-way when I go back to see family!

Dave - head up to Greenville (a bit north of Oxford) for the ancient and revered maid-Rite location there. While near Cincinnati, get yourself some goetta, as well

I'm already back in New York. If only I'd had time, I'd have gotten goetta and a Maid-Rite loosemeat sandwich, too, but this was a family excursion, with all the typical constraints.
As it happens, Arabian Nights, the subject of my previous post, was for a year the site of a Dayton Maid-Rite. It didn't make it.

The one in Greenville has been there over 75 years - no danger of failing

I had posted suggestions for your Oxford trip in http://www.eatingintranslation.com/2011/05/st_georges_dess.html but you never responded. ah well.

Your original suggestions were duly noted, thanks (but, as I wrote, family constraints made themselves felt). I generally respond to suggestions by email, especially when they're posted to an area that's off-topic, as yours were. Sadly, you commented without providing a valid email address; I could find none at Roadfood, either.

Sorry - could not find an email for you either.....so I picked the most current EiT post at the time to post in as a better-than-nothing alternative. ah well, next time :-)
