This paleta from El Sabor de Michoacan (3.8 fl. oz., $2.25) was chunky with pineapple and mango and freshened with lime juice; a double dose of powdered pepper pushed the limit.
Previously Nayeli's wore a sign touting "tortillas hecha a mano," shown below. On my first visit, however, the only tortillas on hand were two commercial varieties packaged in plastic, and return visits were equally unfruitful. Sadly, as you might gather from the photo at bottom, all indications of prepared food have since gone missing.

By email, a reader reports:
I went on Friday evening, and I didn't see any tortillas in the store nor was there a sign on the window. There was a kid working behind the counter, so I couldn't really ask.

That's too bad. Little gems like this that actually do have handmade tortillas and similarly hard-to-find traditional foods are the best parts of New York City cuisine, in my opinion, and one of the reasons I love living in Astoria.
