The bin was labeled "cherry apple," but clearly these are cross-sections of dried star fruit, or carambola ($2.99 per pound). "Good with coffee or tea," said the proprietor. I believe that he — like the owners of Queens Bazaar Food, a twenty-minute walk to the west along 63rd Dr. — comes from Iran and keeps kosher.

If you count the photo caption, I actually spelled this wrong two different ways! Thanks for the prompt; I've made the corrections.

He is from Iran, and he has many delicious and unique food products from the East, dried fruits and nuts including many that are more interesting then the star fruit, e.g. dried apricots from Pakistan, the best roasted almonds I have ever tasted among many others. Nagilah Market is a genuine small jewel in Queens.
