Fried chicken livers (lunch special, $8.95), not quite smothered in gravy and onions, would have been delicious enough all on their own. These, as it happened, were flanked by string beans that had been sauteed with something both calorie-laden and delicious. For a palate freshener: pickled beets.

Sylvia's may not be haute cuisine, but it's consistent and delicious -- and has been for a long, long time. We sorely miss Ms. Woods's presence - she was a gracious woman who always made us feel welcome and would regale us with stories of the restaurant and her life experiences. I strongly encourage anyone who's not visited this Harlem Soul-food icon to do so!
