After the chewy, canned-tasting conch I'd sampled a few days earlier at another restaurant, the sight of fresh shellfish was too enticing to ignore.
I eventually settled on a combo (currently $14.75) of grilled dolphin (mahi-mahi, that is), grilled shrimp, and, at my waitress's suggestion, fried rather than grilled conch. Unlike most of the fare — "from our boats to you," sold at Captain Jim's market counter or prepared to order — the conch comes from the Turks and Caicos, a British Overseas Territory 600-odd miles to the east-southeast.
That said, it's amazingly tender, and wonderful without any sauce or further seasoning. The dolphin and shrimp weren't bad, and the creamed spinach that accompanied them was quite good, but a plate consisting solely of fried conch would put me in seafood heaven.
