It's a gesture you might expect from mustard at a hot dog stand, not from (presumably good) whiskey at a liquor store. Was this was an outer-boroughs allusion to carefree drinking in the big city? If so, the time to settle up has apparently come and gone: The shop seems to be shuttered for good.

I think you're on to something. Is it possible that it was re-purposed signage? Unless that's supposed to be bitters...?

The word seems to be "whisky," but even when enlarged it's very hard to make out.
