Good hospital food can sometimes be had on the outside, looking in. Many health-care facilities attract satellite businesses that cater to medical professionals with a particular heritage; the Filipino restaurants and markets within a short walk of Beth Israel, in Manhattan, are one example.
This Caribbean food truck, provisioned by a Trinidadian chef, provides another. Most days it parks just across the street from Brooklyn's SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital, which have few options for sit-down dining nearby. Even a small stew chicken ($6), shown with macaroni pie, pigeon peas and rice, and a few ladles of gravy, makes for a satisfying lunch.
