Maxwell's

The bands that take the stage nearly every evening range from rock to funk to swing, but the bar-food menu is the real stretch, from hummus to quesadillas to scampi, as well as the standard "big plates" and burgers. Decent selection on draft.

Schnackenberg's Luncheonette

My chocolate shake ($1.60) was thin but foamy and flavorful, too, and the metal mixing cup nearly had enough left over to fill my glass a second time.

Hoboken Daily News

This corner variety store certainly makes a strong case for the "largest collection of magazines" in town, though the selection of candies and other snacks is unexceptional. The Life Savers five-flavor roll (1.14 oz.; 75 cents) has changed its colors in recent years; cherry, pineapple, and orange remain from the original lineup, but lemon and lime have been bumped by raspberry and watermelon.
