(This venue is closed.) A few good choices here for the Vietnamese Dining Out Meetup group, even if LaGuardia Grill serves "Chinese, Szechuan, and Vietnamese cuisine" (usually a sign that a restaurant does nothing well). Fried calamari ($5.95) was very good, though I missed that black-pepper dipping sauce. Spring rolls (two for $2.55) had an interesting, almost earthy taste, and summer rolls (six for $4.50), though run-of-the-mill in flavor, tucked a lettuce leaf just inside the wrapper to lend a greenish hue.
Sugar cane shrimp ($4.75) wrapped artificial-tasting minced seafood around not-so-sweet canes; hot and sour soup (with chicken; $2.75) was neither. Many in the group liked the grilled pork chops (shown; $7.95), but the one I snagged wasn't thoroughly cooked. The usual bo luc lac (sautéed beef cubes; $10.95) was good as usual, as were Saigon-style noodles ($5.95).
Our organizer, Minh, made an especially nice decision with the grilled whole red snapper ($13.95), replacing the familiar, tired sweet-and-sour presentation by ordering a tangy, just-this-side-of-spicy lemongrass sauce. Doesn't seem to be on the menu at many other Vietnamese restaurants, but worth asking for.
