Al-Naimat offers "all kinds of Pakistani, Indian, and Bangladeshi cuisine"; I'm partial to the kind prepared with clarified butter, milk, and sugar. Gajar halwa (above; about $1) features the flavor of grated carrots, accented with sliced almonds (and, likely, cardomom); also look for pale green dudhi halwa, made from squash.
On another occasion, a pistachio-flecked square of almond burfi (below; 75 cents) hovered somewhere between fudge and marzipan. At bottom, jalebi drain after immersion in syrup at the Jackson Heights Diwali Mela.
