Be sure to ask for onions if you order the shmaltz herring fillet (shown; $3.99), to balance its fatty mouthfeel. Cucumber salad ($3.25 per pound) offered bright carrot slices and slivers of onion in a juice that was a little vinegary, a little sugary. A baked apple ($2.50), stuffed to overflowing with golden raisins but without obvious signs of cinnamon or extra sugar, was just sweet enough for dessert.
