Most of Mzalendo's customers are Kenyan expats, explained the kind young fellow behind the counter. As for groceries, though, there's little in the larder, and nothing distinctive; these salty-sweet plantain strips (2.5 oz.; $1) can be found in many other African shops, too.
A more recent visit, on a Saturday afternoon, found the security gate down; a subsequent phone call, during what are generally considered normal business hours, was answered only by the squeal of a fax machine.
