After a couple of hours wandering through and around this massive market, I had what might seem like a skimpy meal: a fried, chili-sauced turnip cake (500 riels, or about 13 cents at the time) that was crispier outside and "meatier" inside than its Chinese counterpart, and rounds of glutinous rice (10 for 1,500 riels) filled with a sweet paste of mung beans. It wasn't the sights of Psar Thmei that threw me off my feed; at mid-morning, Phnom Penh surpassed even Vientiane as the hottest, most humid city where I'd ever gone food hunting.
