On Schermerhorn St., pork and chicken souvlaki were sizzling away; in the tented courtyard alongside the cathedral, stuffed peppers (with salad; $7), spanikopita, pastitsio, and moussaka seemed less lively after being hauled upstairs from the kitchen. (Frankly, I prefer my peppers much saucier, too.) Tiropites (three for $2) were oily, but the phyllo was respectably flaky, and the warm filling tasted more of sweet ricotta than salty feta.
For dessert, I passed over a half-dozen cookies, cakes, and pastries in favor of sour cherries and yogurt (the last serving on the table; $3). Very rich, so I was ready to walk away until I saw that the "loukoumades ladies" at the back of the courtyard had resumed their efforts. Loukoumades (five for $2) are deep-fried dough balls, typically sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar; these were especially springy, even when set aswim in a bowl of sugar syrup.
