They way those ladies were twirling, you'd think they'd already gotten ahold of the sugary street food.
Apart from cans of Inca Kola, and roast-pork sandwiches that seemed so tired, stacked in their wholesale-sized cardboard boxes, that I just let them be, the most popular refreshments at the Bolivian East Coast Parade were served by what looked like a mother-and-son team. Their salteña ($3) packed curried meat and egg in a baked-empanada shell, with sugar enough to do credit to a Hostess pie. And once I unhusked my humita ($4, or three for $10), I discovered not meat, but a wad of sweet, mealy corn dotted with raisins. Also on offer, from a new outfit called Los Andes Ice Cream: a trio of tropical flavors, including the Peruvian fruit known as lúcuma (cup; $3). Not unlike butterscotch, with a mild grainy finish.
