Three weeks after it was featured in a New York Times multimedia guide to Flushing eats, the Shi Hong Mall remains dark.
The mall was without power only a day after the publication of the Times guide, when Joe DiStefano of Serious Eats discovered that "apparently the landlord hadn’t paid the electric bill." As of Thursday, the bills seem to be piling up; a half-dozen envelopes were wedged between the locked doors, including at least one from an energy provider and another from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
The mall's best-known tenant, Xi'an Small Delights, is still in business at its original location; notices on the window (below) direct diners to the basement of the nearby Golden Mall. And though the other Shi Hong vendors have missed out on the "bump" in business following the Times coverage, Xi'an Small Delights apparently has a few dollars to spare on advertising; along its roofline, the Golden Mall is sporting what seems to be a new sign for the Xi'an vendor (bottom).
