On a recent visit to the Perez truck (plain white with a neon green menu, farthest south on Clinton St.), my friends and I had a lively back-and-forth over the relative merits of two tacos. Which was better: the toothsome carne asada (grilled beef, above) or the tender barbacoa (goat, immediately below)? We never did resolve the matter that day, but at $3 each, little stands in the way of repeat taco taste-offs.
Both carne asada and barbacoa are also available on a tostada ($3), with refried pinto beans, lettuce, sour cream, and mild cheese on a toasted tortilla; so is a more unusual choice, pata de res (shown in two photos at bottom). Literally "beef foot," at the Perez truck it's translated as "beef tendon" and takes the form of translucent gelatinous cubes. I like the perplexingly resilient texture that gives, but doesn't give in that quickly; despite the company of my friends, I also discovered that I had the tostada mostly to myself.
