Late Monday afternoon on Labor Day weekend, The Landing was sold out of the traditional Mary Ann buns, but the other essentials of a Chicago-style hot dog ($4) were on hand: a snappy Vienna Beef frank "dragged through the garden" of onion, tomato, cucumber, pickle, and sport pepper. With poppy seeds out of the picture, I allowed myself one additional tweak (at the proprietor's recommendation), swapping out the usual yellow mustard for a spicy housemade "New Orleans" style.
If you hope to catch the all-classic version of the Chicago Dog — and perhaps also chow down on the El Paso Texas Meal Dog (for details, click on the menu below) — do so soon. Though it might pop up on the occasional October afternoon, The Landing is scheduled to take its leave at the end of the month.
