Typical for Columbia's immediate neighborhood, Mondel's storefront has been spiffed up since the shop opened, in 1943. Thankfully, many of the chocolates have retained their original charm.
Best might be the butter crunch (quarter-pound; $6.50), squares of toffee dunked in dark chocolate and rolled in crushed nuts, like a rustic Butterfinger. Also shown: spiced gumdrops (half-pound; $1.50).
