It is sweet, since cane sugar has already been added to the mix, but Mae Chaeng instant matoom beverage (216 g.; $1.50) is made from what's also called bael fruit. In Bangkok the sliced dried bael is often used to prepare a medicinal infusion; to my taste, the bitter orangelike flavor really needs that sugar.
Compared with its predecessor at this location, Payathai Video & Grocery, Inthira devotes proportionately more space to groceries than movies. Not only is there a place on the counter for a certain hard-to-find Thai flavoring, there's also room in the freezer for its real-life inspiration.
