"Edible when roasted, but not commonly consumed" is the skinny on the ripe seeds of the goldenrain tree, Koelreuteria paniculata.
These unripe pods will turn a coppery color come September, and the pealike seeds (one can be glimpsed in the second photo) will blacken. Artwork to the contrary, however, they won't change appreciably in size.
