Walking the Lydig trail near the Morris Park frontier, I caught sight of some old metal signs, painted over but still plain as day.
I stepped in through the swinging door (the newfangled kind, made of glass, mostly, with a handle to pull on), pausing for a moment to take in the counterman's choice of entertainment (a clamorous display, on a small screen, of "hot-blooded men in a raw and relentless era"). My heart was set on a drink, not a smoke, and eventually I settled on a cool A&W root beer (12 fl. oz., 75 cents) — they were plumb out of sarsaparilla.
