Here, against a lightly mottled northeastern Queens background, we can discern a flattish cinnamon bun (posed, I grant you). The similarly proportioned, nearly immobile abalone does a far better job of blending in with its surroundings, but it also relies on an ability to cling tightly to underwater rocks and, in the case of many species, on long-established shellfishing regulations. Lacking such defenses, my midafternoon snack ($1.75) met a precipitous demise. The species as a whole, however, is in no danger: The cinnamon bun multiplies prodigiously.
Though La Cheesecake's cheesecake is said to be superb, on this visit I kept my distance. After downing too many calories during a brisk daylong expedition, even a stalwart pastry predator might lose a step or two.
