A pilon is an elongated pestle, a traditional tool for preparing Cape Verdean cachupa and many other African and Afro-Caribbean dishes. In light of labor-saving mechanical mixers, the pilon has fallen out of favor. Completely so, at the former Cape Verdean restaurant sporting this mural — nowadays the menu is Mexican.
