How snug was the seating? The already small church kitchen, which I found down a flight of stairs, past a walkway hung with racks of used clothing, and through the far door of a thrift shop, doubled as the dining room during the bazaar. Fortunately, the company was amiable, and the food was homemade — literally, by various ladies of the congregation in their own home kitchens. Stuffed peppers ($3); apricot cookies ($2).

Though less distinctly than the red, white, and green of the awning and the flag in the window, slices of Hungarian bacon (about $6.95 per pound) also wore the national colors, thanks to interlaced paprika, garlic, and green pepper.

Good Fortune Supermarket

Opened in 1927 as the Fortway. The movie theater's more than 2,300 seats were split between three screens in the 1970s and five screens in the 1980s; the Fortway split altogether in 2005 and became a supermarket two years later.

Holy Cross Greek Cultural Festival

Diples (Thee-place) are Peloponnesian pastries made from thin sheets of dough that have been folded — hence their doubled-over name — while being fried. Each dipla ($2) is then dressed with syrup, crushed walnuts, and cinnamon. They're very brittle and light; a few small pieces blew free in the breeze.

Also shown: a crisp-eared spit-roasted pig, lemony fresh from a procedure that propriety prevents my showing.

Windfall

Generations of young musicians have posed with studied nonchalance on a New York stoop. Perhaps my current subway reading, Love Goes to Buildings on Fire — an engrossingly detailed chronology of the music scene in mid-1970s New York — helped guide my camera. Heavy on particulars, the book is light on photos, however, and I haven't put my finger on an album cover that captures by design the look these apples found by chance. Any suggestions?

"Of Course I Can"

From the Upper West Side gourmet-market district: a chalked reproduction by the sidewalk artist Hani Shihada of a poster commissioned by the U.S. War Food Administration in 1944. The text of the original poster, created by Dick Williams (and now in the public domain), continued: "I'm patriotic as can be — and ration points won't worry me!"

After the war, the U.S. Department of Agriculture re-captioned the poster, using language also suited to today: "Am I proud! I'm fighting famine — by canning food at home."
